Summer Arts Academy

Grades 5-8 and 9-12 June 3-15, 2024 | Grades K-1 and 2-4 June 17-21, 2024

The Glema Mahr Center for the Arts Summer Arts Academies focus on education and technique, giving your students a strong foundation for the future. There will be a final showcase, but the emphasis will be on education and skills, not the performance.

Grade level refers to grade completed in May 2024.

Grades 9-12: Mean Girls Jr.
June 3-14, 1:00-4:30pm
Performance: Saturday, June 15, 7pm

Fee: $150

Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. Cady and her friends devise a “Revenge Party” to end Regina’s reign with Cady going undercover as an aspiring Plastic. When the lines between the real Cady and her Plastic self get blurred, she must find her way back to herself and her true friends.

Performance: Saturday, June 15, 7pm

Fee: $150

Students will be taught basic stagecraft the first week, then spend the second week applying that knowledge in running the technical aspects of the production.

Grades 5-8: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr.
June 3-14, 8:30am-noon
Performance: Friday, June 14, 7pm
Fee: $150

The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.

June 17-21, 1:00-4:00pm

Welcome to the Hundred Acre Wood, where Winnie the Pooh is once again in search of honey. Along the way, he meets his pals, Tigger, Piglet, Rabbit and Owl, but soon discovers that Christopher Robin has been captured by the mysterious Backson! As they prepare for a rescue operation, the animals learn about teamwork, friendship and, of course… sharing snacks.

Grades K-1: Stories of Mother Goose
June 17-21, 9:00-11:00am
Performance Friday, June 21 at 7pm
Fee: $75

Celebrating the tales of Mother Goose, from childhood favorites to some of the lesser known rhymes, Stories of Mother Goose will delight all audiences.
